Milestones on the Ruby Road to Literacy

A thumbnail history of RAP

  • Summer 1970 – RAP is organized with Dr. Aurora H. Roldan of DLSU as first President
  • 1972 – RAP is registered at the International Reading Association in Delaware – the first Southeast Asian organization listed (the first in Asia was India, in 1968)
  • July 1980 – RAP hosts the 10th IRA World Congress at Philippine Plaza; Dr. Roldan directs the confab
  • Summer 1988, Hong Kong – RAP through President Victoria Rey becomes founding member of the IRA- International Development in Asia Committee (IDAC)
  • 1988 – date – IRA has sent Directors, including Presidents to speak at RAP forums and conferences starting with IRA President-elect Patricia Koppman
  • November 1989 – Constitutional Amendments ratified with President Nemah Hermosa at the helm
  • October 1992 , Iloilo – MidYear Demofest held oiutside NCR for the first time with President Lina Diaz de Rivera spearheading
  • April 1994 – RAP-on-Wheels (R-o-W) launched in Marinduque with Dr. Ellen Cutiongco as Project Chair
  • Summer 1995 – Silver Jubilee Celebration and First Literacy Awards held at Century Park-Sheraton
  • 1993-1997 – the period of RAP’s pursuit and attainment of designation as IRA national affiliate
  • 1996-98 –RAP linked up with the National Centennial Commission for its literacy thrusts
  • Summer 2000 – Pearl Anniversary Celebration and Reading Advocacy Awards held at Galleria Suites
  • 2001- date – RAP gets linked with several national and regional literacy programs such as Buklat-Aklat; Sa Aklat Sisikat; Reading Fun Run etc.
  • 2001 – R-o-W receives McCullough and IDCC Grants from IRA and Missouri State Counciil begins subsidy through 2005.
  • July 2004 – RAP hosts 20th IRA World Congress in Reading attended by over 40 countries at the Shangri-La EDSA Hotel with Dr. Fe Hidalgo as honorary Chair
  • 2010 – Sally Labanda , an educator from Laguna and Albay and a past RAP president gets appointed to the IRA Board of Directors,, the first Asian so honored
